Teach the Children about Christmas.

Teach the children...

Late one Christmas Eve, I sank back, tired but content, into my easy chair. The kids were in bed, the gifts were wrapped, the milk and cookies waited by the fireplace for Santa. As I sat back admiring the tree with its decorations, I couldn't help feeling that something important was missing. It wasn't long before the tiny twinkling tree lights lulled me to sleep.
I don't know how long I slept, but all of a sudden I knew that I wasn't alone. I opened my eyes, and you can imagine my surprise when I saw Santa Claus himself standing next to my Christmas tree. He was dressed all in fur from his head to his foot just as the poem described him, but he was not the "jolly old elf" of Christmas legend. The man who stood before me looked sad and disappointed, and there were tears in his eyes.
"Santa, what's wrong?" I asked, "Why are you crying?"
"It's the children," Santa replied sadly.
"But Santa, the children love you," I said.
"Oh, I know they love me, and they love the gifts I bring them," Santa said, "but the children of today seem to have somehow missed out on the true spirit of Christmas. It's not their fault. It's just that the adults, many of them not having been taught themselves, have forgotten to teach the children."
"Teach them what?" I asked.
Santa's kind old face became soft, more gentle. His eyes began to shine with something more than tears. He spoke softly. "Teach the children the true meaning of Christmas. Teach them that the part of Christmas we can see, hear, and touch is much more than meets the eye. Teach them the symbolism behind the customs and traditions of Christmas which we now observe. Teach them what it is they truly represent."
Santa reached into his bag and pulled out a tiny Christmas tree and set it on my mantle. "Teach them about the Christmas tree. Green is the second color of Christmas. The stately evergreen, with its unchanging color, represents the hope of eternal life in Jesus. Its needles point heavenward as a reminder that mankind's thoughts should turn heavenward as well."
Santa reached into his bag again and pulled out a shiny star and placed it at the top of the small tree. "The star was the heavenly sign of promise. God promised a Savior for the world and the star was the sign of the fulfillment of that promise on the night that Jesus Christ was born. Teach the children that God always fulfills His promises, and that wise men still seek Him."
"Red," said Santa, "is the first color of Christmas." He pulled forth a red ornament for the tiny tree. "Red is deep, intense, vivid. It is the color of the life-giving blood that flows through our veins. It is the symbol of God's greatest gift. Teach the children that Christ gave His life and shed His blood for them that they might have eternal life. When they see the color red, it should remind them of that most wonderful Gift."
Santa found a silver bell in his pack and placed it on the tree. "Just as lost sheep are guided to safety by the sound of the bell, it continues to ring today for all to be guided to the fold. Teach the children to follow the true Shepherd, who gave His life for the sheep."
Santa placed a candle on the mantle and lit it. The soft glow from its one tiny flame brightened the room. "The glow of the candle represents how people can show their thanks for the gift of God's Son that Christmas Eve long ago. Teach the children to follow in Christ's foot steps... to go about doing good. Teach them to let their light so shine before people that all may see it and glorify God. This is what is symbolized when the twinkling lights shine on the tree like hundreds of bright, shining candles, each of them representing one of God's precious children, their light shining for all to see."
Again Santa reached into his bag and this time he brought forth a tiny red and white striped cane. As he hung it on the tree he spoke softly. "The candy cane is a stick of hard white candy: white to symbolize the virgin birth and sinless nature of Jesus, and hard to symbolize the Solid Rock the foundation of the church, and the firmness of God's promises. The candy cane is in the form of a 'J' to represent the precious name of Jesus, who came to earth. It also represents the Good Shepherd's crook, which He uses to reach down into the ditches of the world to lift out the fallen lambs who, like all sheep, have gone astray. The original candy cane had three small red stripes, which are the stripes of the scourging Jesus received by which we are healed, and a large red stripe that represents the shed blood of Jesus, so that we can have the promise of eternal life."
"Teach these things to the children."
Santa brought out a beautiful wreath made of fresh, fragrant greenery tied with a bright red bow. "The bow reminds us of the bond of perfection, which is love. The wreath embodies all the good things about Christmas for those with eyes to see and hearts to understand. It contains the colors of red and green and the heaven-turned needles of the evergreen. The bow tells the story of good will towards all and its color reminds us of Christ's sacrifice. Even its very shape is symbolic, representing eternity and the eternal nature of Christ's love. It is a circle, without beginning and without end. These are the things you must teach the children."
I asked, "But where does that leave you, Santa?"
The tears gone now from his eyes, a smile broke over Santa's face. "Why bless you, my dear," he laughed, "I'm only a symbol myself. I represent the spirit of family fun and the joy of giving and receiving. If the children are taught these other things, there is no danger that I'll ever be forgotten."
"I think I'm beginning to understand."
"That's why I came," said Santa. "You're an adult. If you don't teach the children these things, then who will?"

Salt Lake City

We made it to SLC at 2:00 am. We hit a deer just east of Salmon, ID. Not major damage to our rig, but the deer didn't fair so well. We are heading out to eat, then its on to the convention center to set up our booth. Once that is done, maybe we will even be able to enjoy the area and beautiful scenery. More later.

It's a beautiful day.

Self Reliance Expo. Salt Lake City Utah.

The Expo starts on Friday the 5th and runs through Saturday the 6th. We have been packing up all morning and should be getting on the road any time now. Just a few little details to take care of in the office so it runs smoothly for everyone. We love going to these shows and Expos because we can talk to and show people directly how to use our GrainMakers. They can see how well made it truly is. We know people have quite a few options to choose from for grinding their own grain and we love showing our mill and everything it can do because we know you'll love it. If you are curious and near by we welcome you to come down and we can show you up close why our mill is the BEST one you will ever come across.

We recently sold one to an engineer at NASA who was going to make his own until he came across ours:
( http://grainmaker.com/testimonials.html ).

We are confident in our product quality. This will truly be something that your family will have around for a long, long time. Yes, we have a Lifetime Warranty that is a TRUE Lifetime Warranty. We stand by our word and strive to continually improve everything about our mill including our customer service.

Please come down to the Salt Lake City Expo if you're able and stop by our booth and say hi! We will be happy to see you! Take care and God Bless!

Hitting the ground running!

Well, we met our deadline to get the store up and running by last Friday! It's such a relief to load the new pages and let them do their thing knowing that everything is secure. This has been a long stressful process, but having an attractive and functional website is a blessing that we are happy to have completed. Updates are always a must to keep it looking fresh but this is a good thing. So I hope now to just finish all the loose ends up and it's smooth sailing from here. I feel like we've hit the ground running!

GrainMaker.com

Well,
Calls are picking up and we are making headway on getting our site updated and our shopping cart back online for secure orders for credit cards. It's been a trial moving our website in house, bumps in the road and everything, but ultimately we have total control and instant access to changes we want done. It's a process getting the ball rolling, but in the end it will be wonderful having complete creative control and open communication with the woman sitting there making the changes. Hopefully things will all be working by the end of the week. That's our Goal. We want our customer to feel good about talking to us and ordering from us in any way they feel most comfortable. We happy to help anyone with any question or concern that they may have at any point in their purchase or decision making process. Take care and God Bless!

Autumn Harvest Ode ~ For the love of the Golden Fall.

October gave a party;
The leaves by hundreds came -
The Chestnuts, Oaks, and Maples,
And leaves of every name.
The Sunshine spread a carpet,
And everything was grand,
Miss Weather led the dancing,
Professor Wind the band.
~George Cooper

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,
    Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
    With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;
To bend with apples the moss'd cottage-trees,
    And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
        To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
    With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
And still more, later flowers for the bees,
Until they think warm days will never cease,
        For Summer has o'er-brimm'd their clammy cells.

Who hath not seen thee oft amid thy store?
    Sometimes whoever seeks abroad may find
Thee sitting careless on a granary floor,
    Thy hair soft-lifted by the winnowing wind;
Or on a half-reap'd furrow sound asleep,
    Drows'd with the fume of poppies, while thy hook
        Spares the next swath and all its twined flowers:
And sometimes like a gleaner thou dost keep
    Steady thy laden head across a brook;
    Or by a cyder-press, with patient look,
        Thou watchest the last oozings hours by hours.

Where are the songs of Spring? Ay, where are they?
    Think not of them, thou hast thy music too,--
While barred clouds bloom the soft-dying day,
    And touch the stubble-plains with rosy hue;
Then in a wailful choir the small gnats mourn
    Among the river sallows, borne aloft
        Or sinking as the light wind lives or dies;
And full-grown lambs loud bleat from hilly bourn;
    Hedge-crickets sing; and now with treble soft
    The red-breast whistles from a garden-croft;
        And gathering swallows twitter in the skies.
~John Keats

Heirloom Quality: Real American products.

When you think of the words "American Made" you think about quality construction. Things that are made to last. Tough and hearty is the American tradition. We are independent and strong, made to weather any storm that comes our way. Americans are simply survivors. We know who we are and we make no apologies, we stick to our guns and our principles.  Our country grew out of a small group of radicals and rebels that wanted freedom. Intellectuals that understood even if the cost was high Freedom would be the American way, and it would be strong and lasting. "American" always stood for quality, durability and resilience. What happened?

We want something that our grandchildren can use with pride. We don't want to pay for it. Slowly but surely over the years Americans have forgotten that durability costs a little more upfront but lasts much much longer than it's counter part, cheap. When you want heirloom quality you will not be getting it from China or a third world country where they only pay the children 20 cents a day to make your shoes, shirts, and soccer balls. Buying American made products not only support real Americans, but they support YOU and your children and your children's children. Not to mention, if you don't have to replace it frequently you SAVE money!

When Randy built the GrainMaker in 1999 for his wife, Bonnie, he wanted AMERICAN MADE quality, which he really didn't find. He wanted to created something that would last well beyond his lifetime that his grand-kids could use and be proud of what he had built.  So, in building the GrainMaker he kept all of this in mind, and was careful choosing American Materials for the GrainMaker so in the end he could honestly look at it and know without a doubt he had created an heirloom quality product. A 100% real American product.  Does it cost more than some of it's counter parts? Yes, but it is also very comparable to other grain mills of 'similar' quality. GrainMaker is family owned so this is a personal item and we want everyone to love them as much as we do. Go ahead, compare. We will prove that we are built to last.

Grainmaker and Facebook

Facebook is one of those places where you feel the odd anxiety to acquire as many friends as possible. It's like a warped form of high school where you can actually tally why the cool kids are the cool kids, and it's all to do with the numbers.

It's a numbers game, we want the numbers.

We have a great product and we work very hard at making it the best in the world. That's always been our aim. It's not only the product, our Grainmaker hand mill, that needs to be the best. It's our employees that need to perform on a higher level as well. Customer service is a big deal. We are a small family company that knows what it's like to deal with companies that only care about the bottom line. We CARE about our customers as much as we care about our product.

I look at Facebook as another portal for customer service. I see these big companies with Facebook pages with thousands of friends, but no real interaction. No real personality. We want more friends but we want to keep the small town family personality that has always been a huge part of our company. We want people to know we will always have a person, a living breathing person, who take care of them and their Grainmaker. We take great pride in what we do. Please, invite as many people to be our friend on Facebook, to to read our blog, or follow us on Twitter. These can only make us stronger as a company. It gets us out there and REALLY seeing what people think about our mill and gives us more insight on how to make it better.

Truly it's numbers game. We know this. We want to keep our employees reaching for better everything, so that we can help our customers to the fullest, make our mill better and treat everyone like they matter. Get us out their, friends. We will always work hard to show our customers how much we care about quality.

Being More Social!

We have decided to have more presence on the web. We now have our very own Facebook page!

Monday, June 21, 2010

Hello!

When my husband Randy and I decided back in 1998 that we wanted to have a wheat grinder, we had no idea that path that would put us on.

We both grew up on farms, ate beef we raised, vegetables from our gardens and drank milk from the cows we milked. We did not however grind our own flour.

Thinking that sounded like a good idea, Randy made me a mill from materials out of the scrap pile at his job.

That little mill was the tool that God used to change the whole course of our lives. My husband was able to come home and start his own tool & die/machine shop business. That led to our children working with us and I found myself grinding out flour and making 80 loaves of bread every Friday to sell at the farmers market.!

After eleven years we still have the family business, although it is no longer at our home. We simply out grew our barn as well as our electric supply for our machines. God has blessed us with a shop just 3 miles down the road. We now have several other men that work for us with families of their own. Two of our sons continue to work here in the business and our other son works for a company just down the road that we do work for. Our daughter is married to a wonderful Christian man and they are in the process of starting a youth ministry. We have seen many changes in eleven years with our business moving and growing, our children growing up, getting married and having their own children, family members that were dear to us pass away. Life is always full of changes, but the one constant has always been Christ. He is always the same, He doesn’t leave us or forsake us and when we ask him to direct our steps He always does!

It is my desire to be able to share ideas, recipes and helpful hints to go along with our GrainMaker mill. I will look forward to "meeting" new friends here and please don't hesitate to contact me with your ideas and tips too!

Smile!
